Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) indeed can not do much when Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin) to slaughter his beloved father. But that does not mean that Mattie would just give up. There is simmering resentment in his heart. Mattie must avenge his father's death. Mattie can not kill Tom Chaney with his own hands, but she knew anyone who could do it.
Mattie then hired a marshal named Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) to kill Tom Chaney who reportedly fled to territory controlled by Indians. Although the Rooster did not refuse this task, but if Mattie Rooster would not participate. Unfortunately, Mattie did not agree. He must participate in this mission of revenge. Did not have much choice, Rooster and Mattie are forced to carry.
Unfortunately this mission of revenge become complicated when Texas Ranger named LeBoeuf (Matt Damon), appears. LeBoeuf was also being hunted Tom Chaney because he was also involved in other killings in the area of Texas. Mattie and Rooster should be quick. They have to finish off Tom Tom Chaney before LeBoeuf arrest and took him to Texas.
